Healthcare Scholarships Awarded to Local Students

ATKINSON, NE — West Holt Medical Services Foundation is pleased to announce its 2018 spring scholarship recipients. Emma Laible and Devon Dohrman will receive $500 each toward their degrees in the medical field.

Laible is a 2017 graduate of West Holt High School and is currently working towards her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and minor in Psychology at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. Upon graduating in 2021, she plans on applying to medical school to become a surgeon.

Laible shares, “Medicine is an honorable profession as it seeks to help those who need it most. Receiving this scholarship is a tremendous help in obtaining my goal of becoming a surgeon and returning to the Holt County area.”  

Dohrman is a 2018 graduate of West Holt High School and will begin his study of Medical Laboratory Science this fall at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Dohrman has been accepted into the Rural Health Opportunity Program (RHOP) and plans on returning to the Atkinson area upon completion of his degree.

“I want to return to rural Nebraska because this is where I grew up and I know how important it is for our community to have the proper amount of healthcare professionals,” Dohrman said.

Since 1988, West Holt Medical Services Foundation has awarded over $50,000 to 230 students, many of which have returned to the area for employment.

“West Holt Medical Services is proud to continue this legacy with hopes that these students will return to the area to provide much needed healthcare services to our community, shared Foundation and Marketing Director Jessica Prussa.

West Holt Memorial Hospital has announced its selection of its 2018 $500 healthcare scholarship recipients, Emily Burk and Megan Nachtman. 
                           
Burk is a 2018 graduate of West Holt High School. This fall she will attend Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska and pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and minor in Biology. Upon graduation, Burk plans to apply for medical school to become a surgeon.

“Being born and raised in Holt County I have a unique understanding of the hurdles that small town medicine must jump through to obtain quality healthcare. This gives me the motivation to be successful in my educational goals and eventually return to the area to bring big city medicine to the small town setting. I would like to give rural areas the same opportunities they would have if they traveled three to four hours to a large hospital,” Burk shared.

Nachtman is a 2018 graduate of Stuart Public School. This fall she will attend Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska to achieve an Associate of Applied Science degree to become a Physical Therapy Assistant.

“After completing my college education, I would like to obtain a job back in rural Nebraska to help individuals with their physical therapy needs,” Nachtman said.
